Bushabout May 08 - Gibb River Road

May 2nd the Gibb River Road has just been offically opened 4 days. The graders had just completed the last section near Mt Barnett.

Stat's for the 600 odd k's -
Average speed :- 40kph,
Tire Pressures :- Land Cruiser :- 26psi front, 28psi back
Bushtracker :- 26psi all round.

No tire damage on the Gibb section of road!

We find these tire pressures the best on dirt and corrugated roads, with centre diff lock engaged for better road handling.

Other Vehicle:- 86 total (including the Kalumburu section) No caravans, 14 Camper trailers, three boats, three quad bikes, one with a trailer, the remainder tour buses, hire camper vans or camping vehicles.

These are the only real features on the Eastern end of the Gibb, unless you visit the tourist traps at Equestro and Emma Gorge, not our scene.

This is more like it! An old gravel pit off the dusty Gibb and out of sight.

1st major river x-ing - good rocky bottom and flowing slow and at only 400mm not a problem.

After these two river x-ing's, it was a good run all the way to the Kalumburu Road. see seperate BLOG on the Kulumburu Road.

All the station stays were still closed, and other side tracks and features of interest had locked gates. All now controlled by "Communities".

Refueled and topped up with water at the road house, decided to pay our $12.50 each to visit Manning Gorge, this included the camping fee for one night.

A pleasant swim to start the hike to the falls / gorge.

Where the hell are we going! It's a well marked trail.

Not sure what we where expecting, but the gorge / falls where somewhat disappointing. It was a great hike to get there ____!

It was a very tight fit with the Bushtracker behind at the Lennard Gorge. As we were there early only one other vehicle pulled up whist we were having breakfast. They walked to and from the gorge with us. It would be tricky turning around with any cars in the car park. Ohterwise it would be sit a wait till they leave!

This was a neat camp, heaps of birds along the water course.

A check under the bonnet found the radiator mounting bolt loose on one side.

Neat rock formation and aptly named!

As we were close and early morning we went to check out Windjana Gorge.

This is more like it real features and cliffs!

As you can see no shortage of these fresh water croc's, dozen's of them. They were only in the lower part of the water course. I am sure they feed em! to keep em! there for the TOURIST!

A neat old tree, branching out in all directions

That's it folk's, no drama on the Gibb, it's no longer a road more like a Highway (just graded help's) as long as you take it slow and steady, with low tire pressure's it's a breeze.

Cheers
